The challenge can be if you want to write a paper in your area of specialization that has something to do with what people are talking about right now. If you're interested in cultural history, then you might want to try to include those stories from ancient Greece, Rome, or Spain, but the opportunity will lie in how you bring those stories to life in your writing.For example, in this current period of political upheaval, the news media is full of discussion of the tensions between the old and the new. People are so excited by the possibility of living in a nation where the young have control of the future, and they are looking forward to a time when they will not be as constrained by traditional roles that were set forth in the past. The stakes are high, and our culture is being challenged. In many ways, the humanities are a consta nt in our society; they are important when there is a chance to make the past present, and they are also important when we think about moving into the future.As part of the study of public affairs, your paper may be divided into two broad areas: first, the core social science and political science issues, and second, that same intellectual tradition applied to the study of the humanities. There is a problem with government which can be traced back to a series of failures. Now, part of what is happening in the private sector is a situation where people are losing their jobs, but the root of the problem is very much the same. T he only difference is that the decisions that were made were made in the corporate world; and so the social and cultural issues that we see today have a huge bearing on our ability to solve the problem of budget cuts.These are just some of the areas that students of the humanities can pursue as part of their specialization. It is your responsibility to present the issues in your discipline, and to include as much about what the humanities have to offer as possible.
